Falafel

Oh Falafel! I feel a song coming along already. What a marvellous creation. Surely it is a king amongst foods. And one for the ages - this is even vegan friendly, which for such a meat lover as I am is a fairly rare thing.

I recently thought I'd test the children in my cooking club (aged 8-10) and see if they would embrace something new and different - the fabled falafel. I am pleased to say that they were popular and particularly well enjoyed with hummus and tsatziki.

So give them a go, they are quick and simple but oh so delicious. If you are prepared enough to cook your own chickpeas then you will reap the rewards - the added flavour is worth it!

Prep Time: 10 minutes

Cooking time: 8 minutes

Serves: 4

Ingredients:

  • Chickpeas (400g)

  • Red onion - 1

  • Ground cumin - 1 tsp

  • Ground coriander -1 tsp

  • Harissa paste - 1/2 tsp

  • Plain flour - 4 tbsp

  • Hummus and tzatziki to serve

Method:

1). Drain a 400g can chickpeas and pat dry with kitchen paper.

2). Chop the red onion and tip into the blender with spices.

3). Blend until fairly smooth, then shape into golf-ball sized balls with your hands (slightly damp hands will help it not stick).

4). Place the patties in hot oil and fry for 3 minutes on each side. Drain, cool and serve.
